Silver Tetradrachm of Alexander the Great
Macedonian Empire, 336-323 B.C. Alexander III of Macedon conquered a huge empire from 336 to 232 BC. His empire included most of the known world from Greece to India in the east, Central Asia in the north and Egypt in the south. To help control and unify his empire, he created a new standard series of coinages to be struck throughout his empire with the same designs. This piece is one of the first “world” trade coins, and was struck at Pella in Macedon. |
