The coat of arms of Great Britain has retained the same basic
appearance on British coins since 1837. The three lions in the shield's
first and fourth quadrants represent England, the upright (rampant) lion
represents Scotland, and a harp in the third quadrant represents
Ireland. The shape of the crown atop the shield changed slightly during
the reigns of Victoria and Elizabeth II.
