Evening Mini-Seminars

Mini-seminars are introductory, hands-on courses conducted in two, or three three-hour sessions. They allow Seminar students to study more than one area of interest, or survey something completely new. Mini-seminars begin after dinner. Classes are limited to 15; pre-registration is required.

G. The History of Mexico Through Her Coinage
Saturday & Sunday, July 8-9, 2006, 6:30 – 9:30 p.m.
This presentation gives the historical context, including political, military, ideological and social background for the most important issues in coinage, paper money, and medals issued in Mexico.

Instructor: Ricardo De Leon Tallavas, passionate collector of Mexican coinage.

H. Minting Misadventures: An Introduction to Collecting Error Coins
Saturday, Sunday, & Monday, July 8-10, 2006, 6:30 – 9:30 p.m.
Error coins are cool. Whether you are a seasoned collector or new to the hobby, error coins are fun to collect and a wonderful way to start a conversation. In addition, examining and studying error coins are a great way to learn about the minting process and what can go wrong. Participants in this interactive mini-seminar will learn how to get the most out of this fascinating and growing collectable specialty.

I. Counterfeit Detection of World Paper Money
Sunday, Monday & Tuesday, July 9-11, 2006, 6:30 – 9:30 p.m.
Students in this seminar work with actual notes using both microscopes and light to separate good notes from bad notes. Topics covered are: history of counterfeiting; printing techniques; security devices and their replication by counterfeiters; raised and altered notes; entrepreneurial counterfeiting since the 19th century.
NOTE: Counterfeiting of U.S. notes is not covered in this seminar.

Instructor: Joseph Boling, ANA chief judge and student of world paper money.

J. Grading Early American Copper Coins
Monday & Tuesday, July 10-11, 2006, 6:30 – 9:30 p.m.
Explore grading, technical, market and “EAC,” of early American copper coins with two of the leading experts in the field.

Instructors: Douglas Bird, professional numismatist and dealer, early American copper coins, and Steve Carr, author, researcher and teacher.

K. A Millennium of Byzantine Coinage
Monday & Tuesday, July 10-11, 2006, 6:30 – 9:30 p.m.
From the transference of power from the Eastern Roman Empire (Rome) to the Western Roman Empire (Constantinople), what we now call the Byzantines were a formidable presence in World history. They shaped art, law, religion and coinage for over one thousand years. The legacy lives on.

Instructor: Prue Morgan Fitts, ANA Governor and student of Byzantine history and coinage.

L. The Numismatic Grandeur of King George III (1760-1820)
Monday & Tuesday, July 10-11, 2006, 6:30 – 9:30 p.m.
The reign of George III witnessed extraordinary growth in numismatics: an explosion in coins and tokens of all sorts, plus a vast production of exquisite medals by an outstanding array of world-class medalists. See it all here!
