Candidate for Governor: Laura Sperber

Lincroft, NJ
LM 4366

SperberI grew up in Highland Park, New Jersey, where I began collecting Wheat pennies, hoping to collect 100,000 coins by the time I was 14. I soon began attending small, local New Jersey coin shows and attended my first major show, the ANA convention in New York City, in 1976. It was there that I met renowned dollar dealer John Love and his table of DMPL Morgans. At the time, Superior had the 1913 nickel on display, and, after holding it, I was changed forever. I even owned it 35 years later!

I attended Monmouth University, but after founding LSS RCI in 1979 to focus on wholesale and beginning to regularly attend shows in 1980, I left after my sophomore year and never looked back. In 1986 I co-founded Legend Numismatics with partner George Huang, and we have been a driving force in the numismatic world ever since. The first coin I ever bought was an 1869 half dime, eventually graded PR-65 by PCGS, which I bought raw in 1977. To this day, I still keep that very coin in my desk.

Since founding Legend in 1986, I have helped complete numerous #1 collections, and I am proud to say that I have now achieved my goal of handling every major, classic rarity. Recently, I approached Dan Morphy of Morphy Auctions with the idea of forming a boutique-style auction house, and in August 2012 we partnered to form Legend-Morphy Rare Coin Auctions. Since then, Legend-Morphy has been named the official auction house of the PCGS members-only show and held its fourth auction on April 11.

If elected to the office of governor for the ANA's 2013-15 Board of Governors, I plan to focus on consumer protection, as well as expanding both membership benefits and the reach of the ANA Museum.

I have residences in Dallas, Texas; Singer Island, Florida; and Monmouth Beach, New Jersey, where I live with my ferret and two beautiful cockatoos. Aside from numismatics, my passions include fishing in the Florida Keys, and my partnership in a rock-and-roll fantasy camp located in Las Vegas.
