ANA Seeks Nominations for Numismatic Art Award for Excellence in Medallic Sculpture
COLORADO SPRINGS – The American Numismatic Association is accepting nominations for its 41st annual Numismatic Art Award for Excellence in Medallic Sculpture.
The award honors an artist whose cumulative lifetime achievements in the field of medallic sculpture have been of the highest order. Nominations, which are due April 1, should include the name of the nominee, ANA number (if a member), address, contact information, a list of numismatic accomplishments, a brief biography and photographs of at least five medals – or Internet addresses where they can be viewed. Nominators should include their addresses and contact information; artists may nominate themselves.

The award, which exemplifies the fine art of designing, sculpting and engraving, will be presented at the annual ANA awards banquet August 19 at the World’s Fair of Money in Denver.
“The list of past winners of this award reads like a who’s who of American and international medalists,” said Mel Wacks, who chairs the NAAEMS Committee. Award recipients include Paul Vincze, who won the first award in 1966, U.S. Mint chief engravers Frank Gasparro and Elizabeth Jones, Gilroy Roberts, Karen Worth, Marcel Jovine, Dora de-Pedery Hunt and John Mercanti.
The NAAEMS award selection committee includes Wacks, the writer and coordinator of the longest continuing series of art medals in the U.S.; David Alexander, one of the founders of Medal Collectors of America; Richard Doty, Ph.D., curator of coins at the Smithsonian Institution; Cory Gillilland, Ph.D., the U.S. representative to FIDEM; Jim Licaretz, president of the American Medallic Sculpture Association; Doug Mudd, ANA curator of exhibitions; Mashiko Nakashima, medallic art gallery owner; Donald Scarinci, member of the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee; and Alan Stahl, Ph.D., curator of numismatics at Princeton University.
