In the late nineteenth century, the United States was growing into a strong country with a stable coinage system. The leaders of this country desired to compete with other dollar sized coinage circulating in Asia, so the United States officially released dollars slightly heavier than normal dollar coins. Ultimately, these coins were successful in Asia, but not in their home country, the United States.
