Roll searching - Part 7

Coins | JudeA

I went through another box of pennies recently, and decided to share my finds. Here they are!Wheat Cents: 4 - I have been noticing a shortage of wheat cents in boxes lately, and I have 2 theories as to why. Theory 1 is as follows. Around the same time I started searching boxes, the Great American Coin Hunt was going on. If you don't know what that was, it was an event for Coin Week 2019, where lots of dealers and collectors decided to make searching your pocket change a little more interesting by doing "Coin drops" or basically spending coins like buffalo nickels, wheat cents, or mercury dimes at places. This put alot of collectable coins into circulation, and maybe the 8-10 wheat cents per box I was getting were from the Great American Coin Hunt. Theory 2 is that I have picked all the wheat cents out of change. I live in a small town, and not much change goes around, so I might slowly be getting wheat cents from the bank, and they having less and less of them every time I search a box. Commet down below what you feel happened.Lincoln Bicentennials: 18 - This was a good box for these. I found one of every design and mintmark, except for the LP3 and LP4 P mintmarks.1968 S - 1974 S cents: 8 - In my oppinion, the hardest of these to find are the 1968 S and the 1974 S, as I hardly ever find those. I almost have a full roll of these now, probably would be if I took out the nicer ones from my album.2017 P cents: 5 - I have started to only keep the nicer ones of these, as they really aren't worth anything extra, and I just like them because of their unique story. It was the 225th aniversary of the Philidelphia mint, and the mint decided to celebrate by adding a P mintmark to cents for the first time in history! This only lasted for one year, and in 2018 they went back to the traditional no P mintmark on cents.Others - No Canadian cents or dimes in this box. I don't know how to explain that dimes appeared in my first 2 boxes, but not in any others. I do believe I found a lesser known version of the 2006 DDO, more about that in another blog.I hope you enjoyed! Stay safe, and happy hunting!

2020 W Nickel?

Coins | JudeA

In 2019, the US mint decided to include special 2019 W mintmarked pennies in their proof, uncirculated, and silver proof sets that they offer yearly to commentate the 110th anniversary of Aberham Lincoln. There was an uncirculated version in the uncirculated set, a proof version in the proof set, and a reverse proof version in the silver set. I purchased the proof set last year specifically for the W penny, because as you know, I like cents, and thought this would make a nice edition to my collection. I thought this was going to be a one time thing with the mint releasing a W mintmarked coin. Today, I received the US mint catolog for this year, I looked through it, and everything seemed normal, except the basketball commemorative, which looks pretty good in my opinion. Everything was going good until something caught my eye. They are offering a 2020 W nickel with the sets this year. In my opinion, this is kind of ruined the 2019 W cent. I liked it because it was unique, the only circulating coin with a W mintmark, and the mint had a good reason to make this coin. It seems like they have no event pertaining to the nickel to make this, and the only reason they had is to continue the W set. This will probably lower the price of the 2019 W cent because now it isn't as unique. All in all, I think that the 2020 W nickel was uncalled for, but a good decision by the mint to sell more sets, because the W cent really enticed more people to buy them. Commit your opinion below if you feel like it! Have a good day!

Roll searching - Part 6

Coins | JudeA

Just went through another penny box today, and I've gotta say, it was definitely one of the worse ones. Here are the finds.Wheat Cents - 3 Yup, only 3 wheat cents in this box. My average is usually 5 or 6 per box.Lincoln Bicentennials - 16 Pretty good box for these, I also think I may have found an error, which is good.2017 P - 6 I have started to just grab these if I see them, and not search for them like I search for wheat cents or such, there were probably more in the box, but I don't want to flip every shield cent.Other coins - I had a pile of coins that I was going to check for numerous different errors, mostly wide and close AM coins, but didn't find anything.
