MPC EXPANSION VICTORY NOTE

Paper Money-World | Longstrider

I would like to share this note I just picked up from a great seller on the Bay. It is the One Peso Silver Certificate VICTORY note. The 1944 VICTORY SERIES NO. 66. This is an overprint to celebrate the liberation of the Philippians from the Japanese troops. It was printed in the US and issued in the Philippians. The word VICTORY was overprinted on the back. The notes were very important to the Islands as they had been forced to use Japanese Occupation Currency. I have a small collection of the Allied Nations counterfeit notes of the Japanese Occupation notes. I thought this would make a nice addition to this collection. The back of the note has an image of Apolinario Mabine. Besides a huge list of accomplishments for the Philippians and Her people, he was the first Prime Minister. The note certifies that one peso in silver pesos or legal tender currency of the United States has been deposited in the Treasury of the Philippines. This note measures about 6 ¼” X 2 ¾”. Most of the notes were destroyed after WWII but some can still be found. Thanks for reading this short blog. Feel free to comment.

1994 STRUCK THROUGH SAE

Coins-United States | Longstrider

I picked up something different the other day that I would like to share here. I saw this at my coin dealer and had to have it, a 1994 SAE or Silver American Eagle. What makes this uncirculated coin special is it exhibits a great “Strike Through” error across the date.

Paper Money-U.S. | Longstrider

Well, I'm sitting here at home wondering when, if, my Wi-Fi will come back up. The same problem occurred all day Saturday. So, I thought I would share this new piece of MPC history I received in the mail yesterday. I have no idea when this will show up on our blog pages so be kind. If you look at the photos below you may see something that you haven't seen before.

OH CANADA-CANCELLED BY PANDEMIC

Coins-World | Longstrider

The other day I received this kinda cool, kinda sad coin in the mail. Thanks to a fellow member here with strong likes for Canadian coins and The Royal Canadian Numismatic Society, I was told about these unique slabbed coins and was able to order one. As you can see in the photos this is a PVGS Sample slab with a Canadian 2020 fifty cent coin in it. The label states that it's from the Royal Canadian Numismatic Association Convention, this year to be held in Halifax. As is stated on the label, it was "Cancelled by Pandemic". Another one bites the dust.

SERIES 692 MPC

Paper Money-U.S. | Longstrider

I just noticed it has been quite a while since my last blog. I guess it's time for a new one. I have a dozen or so new Peace Dollar VAMs to share but I believe I will take a different path today. I have been getting back into Military Payment Certificates, MPC, again and would like to share some with you. My last blog on MPC's was about Chief Hollow Horn Bear. He is on the Series 692 ten dollar bill. I believe this is one of most sought after bills. If you would care to view this blog it is listed here on 20 April 2020.

KNOW THAT'S A MUSTACHE

Coins-United States | Longstrider

Today I would like to discuss one of my new pick-ups, a 1922 Peace Dollar VAM 12A called the “Moustache” die break. If you look at the photos it is easy to see how Miss Liberty received this nickname. Generally speaking the year 1922, of Peace Dollars, is one of the years that produced the greatest number of die varieties we call VAMs. That is all a VAM is really, a list of different die varieties in a given series of coins. We usually are referring to Morgan and Peace dollars but it can be any series. It was first listed by the two gentlemen that it gets its name, Leroy Van Allen and A. George Mallis. That makes up the acronym VAM “Van Allen-Mallis”.

2020 SAMOA 2 TALA

Coins-World | Longstrider

I picked up an interesting coin the other day I want to share here. It is a 2020 Samoa Silver 2 Tala. It is a one ounce of 99.999 silver, non-circulating but legal tender coin. It caught my eye for a few reasons. First it has an antique silver finish. I always wanted to see one of these in my hand. Next and most important it features a dragon-like reptile on it. I'm a dragon freak.

COUNTERFEIT MONEY NOT ALWAYS A BAD THING!

Paper Money-World | Longstrider

Today I have something a little different to share. I've been saving this one and I feel it will tie in nicely with the blog on the US Mint in Manila. As we all should know, the Philippines was overrun by Imperial Japanese Forces during WWll. When this occurred, in 1942, the Japanese issued their own currency there called Japanese Occupation Currency. This was to replace the older pre-occupation money.
