1923 PEACE DOLLAR VAM-1AA

Coins-United States | Longstrider

At the risk of boring people with my articles on Peace Dollar VAMs in general and extra hair specifically, I am writing today on another one. The 1923 VAM 1AA is commonly referred to as an Extra Hair Elite 30 Peace Dollar VAM. I can’t help myself. This is an amazing example of one and I would like to share it with you.

Exonumia | Longstrider

Today I would like to share a very special coin I just received. I saw these on a coin group on Facebook. The guy selling is named Joe Poanessa but, as you will see, he is out of them.

1922 VAM 2A- EAR RING-TOP 50 JEWEL!

Coins-United States | Longstrider

The other day I gave up waiting and pulled the trigger on one of the “Crown Jewels” to the Top 50 Peace Dollar VAMs. This would be the 1922-P VAM 2A. Often referred to as the Ear Ring variety. It gets its name from the shape and location of a major obverse die break. As you can see in the photos, it is located near Liberty’s ear and is dangling down her neck.

1882 O/S VAM-5 MORGAN SILVER DOLLAR

Coins-United States | Longstrider

This, my newest blog, is going to take a small turn. As many know I am working on collecting the Peace Dollar Top 50 and Elite 30 collections. This is different but almost the same. In the photos you will see my example of a Morgan Dollar Top 100 VAM-5. It is an 1882-O/S from the Oregon Collection graded AU 58 by ANACS. Even though I love Peace Dollars I also enjoy Morgan’s and have a few. This one is special to me as it was gifted to me by the Oregon Collection Guy. Thanks Scott. He may have been trying to get me out of “The Dark Side” as Morgan collectors call us Peace Dollar guys.

A NEW PEACE DOLLAR VAM?

Coins-United States | Longstrider

The other day I was so happy for myself. I found my first Peace Dollar VAM. Not one that is already slabbed. One I found “in the wild”. A little back story is in order. As some of you know I am in a hunt to complete a Peace Dollar Top 50 and an Elite 30 sets. I am a huge fan of Peace Dollar VAMs. I love the series, the artist, the model and the history. Let’s not forget I am a VAM nut.

IS IT JUST ME?? I DOUBT IT!

Coins-United States | Longstrider

Today, Sunday, I was looking at a for sale post at my favorite buying site VAMWorld. One if the major players there just listed some raw Peace Dollar VAMs. As most of you know I am working hard to complete a Top 50 set of them. One of the coins I need is a 1922 VAM 2A, called Ear Ring for the die break at Liberties ear. This is a higher priced coin, at least for me. This one was very reasonably priced.

1924 PEACE DOLLAR VAM 5A-BEST OF THE BEST

Coins-United States | Longstrider

The newest Top 50 Peace Dollar in my collection is the 1924 VAM 5A called a Wing Break. Mine is grade an MS 62 by ANACS, In my opinion, this is a very spectacular VAM. It is very apparent, to the naked eye, what is going on. Simply put, it has a large circular die break in the middle of the eagle's wing, on the reverse. 1924 was the last year that the mint put out large numbers of die breaks.

WHAT IS A VAM

Coins-United States | Longstrider

I am going to be very honest here and tell everybody this blog is a DIRECT COPY from VAM World 2.0. The only reason I am doing this is because I get many messages from members here, asking me what a VAM really is. Now these people could just go to this site, I always source, to find out but they don’t. I wish I could give back any points but one can’t do that. So, here you go:

1922 VAM-2E2--WING BREAK--TOP 50 PEACE DOLLAR

Coins-United States | Longstrider

The latest pick up I bought at the Las Vegas coin show, a few weeks ago, is a 1922 Peace Dollar VAM-2E2 called a “Wing Break”. It is a member of the Top 50. I am trying for the entire Top 50 set as the variety features can usually be seen with your naked eye. This particular specimen was graded, slabbed, and attributed by ANACS. They are a very popular TPG for VAMs as they list a great many more VAM’s than the other two major graders. It made an AU 55 grade, which seems a bit conservative to me. There is still quite a bit of mint luster and very little wear. Oh well, that’s the way it goes. I usually am not too concerned about the grade assigned as much as the VAM designation.

VAM 2C2-ANOTHER 1922 PEACE DOLLAR VARIETY

Coins-United States | Longstrider

On January 17, 2019 I wrote a blog entitled “1922 Peace Dollar Vam 2C. This blog is an addition to it. In the first blog I mentioned an additional VAM that is called a 1922 VAM 2C2. This particular blog is about that coin which I have purchased after posting the first blog. As you can see in the photos, the original die break has increased in size very much. This means the coin has a much larger chip on it. That’s probably not the correct word for it but that is what I am using.
