Easter Egg Toned Coins

Coins | Numinerd9

I just wanted to share some pretty coins with "Easter egg" style toning - a few 1944 steels! The US Mint made 2 franc coins for Belgium on leftover 1943 steel cent planchets. This is about as close as any of us can ever come to owning a "44 steel. Enjoy and have a Happy Easter, to those who celebrate the holiday! (Wanted to show them from a few different angles; tough sometimes for me with the iPhone camera to do nice toning like this justice; still very nice colors, imho.)

Treasure found in (my) pocket!

Coins-United States | Numinerd9

As further proof that you CAN still find actual collectible coins, or "Treasures" in your own pocket, here's my latest find: a 1939-D Jefferson Nickel! I've always searched my change since I was but a wee lad in the 1980's, always hoping to find this coveted (relative) 'key date' Jefferson in my change.(My wife came home from buying dinner the other night and received this in her change.) When I saw it i thought it was maybe a 1959 (yeah - it's time I got some glasses for my failing, tired 45-year old eyeballs!) I've found several 1939's over the years, and even some "wartime composition" nickels, but never this key date. And while I realize that calling this coin a key date, doesn't compare to big time keys of say, Merc. dimes, Washington quarters, et cetera, but when you compare this to other (normal die) Jefferson nickels, this is the one with the highest retail value, and it's the only "39-D I've ever even owned. It's problem-free, in a decent/choice VF condition - and it only cost me face value! Keep looking closely at your change, everybody - you never know when the lightning will strike! So what have you found lately in your change? Post some of your recent finds!

All bidders who successfully win lots will be sent an invoice within a few days of the end of the auction; probably on Monday the 21st or Tuesday the 22nd. DoNOT send in your payment for lots won until you have received an invoice/e-mail from me!! Here's one last look at a few featured items:

Close-up Coin Images Quiz #5 - "Fives & Dimes"Part I

Coins-United States | Numinerd9

This time the quiz is only for 5c or 10c US coin denominations, including half dimes (you're welcome for the no commems this time!) As usual, the challenge is to see if you can identify each of the coins pictured, just based on a close-up image of a coin. Of course, you don't have to try coming up with a date and/or mintmark; just name each coin's series. Answers will be posted soon - good luck!
