Wright Brothers

Coins-United States | slybluenote

Since today was the launch of the manned Spacex module, I thought it would be a good time to blog about this commemorative coin that my brother-in-law left me after his passing in April. Rod wasn't a collector, but someone had given him this coin as a present. When my wife and sister-in-law went out to California to take care of his personal affairs they brought this coin back and told me that Rod wanted me to have it. The coin is a very nice silver dollar and I'm proud to add it to my collection. It fit in quite nicely!

The Best Things In Life

Coins-United States | slybluenote

Summer before last my baby sister and I went on an impromptu trip over to Memfus (Memphis, Tn.) to find Elvis. Since this type of thing doesn't occur very often, I was excited. I drove from Central New York down to Virginia, rested up for a few hours and we departed Virginia about 0230 a.m. We arrived at our Air b&b about 1730 that day which was a Friday. Since I'm a blues guy, we had plans to eat dinner at the Blues City Cafe on Beale Street the next day (Saturday). We had also talked about taking a tour of Graceland. I'm also a musical kind of guy too, so I was interested in Graceland because I had never been there. I used to drive a big truck down to Memfus twice a week, but had been no further than the Fedex terminal. Come to find out, we had to book our tour of Graceland the day before we took it. So we booked our tour for Sun. It's a pretty long drive from Va. to Memphis so we were discussing the trip back over dinner on Sat., and determined we should stay one more day and leave on Monday morning instead of Sunday night.

Spring Beauty

Coins-United States | slybluenote

Being born and raised in Virginia, I'm partial to 3 seasons; spring, summer, and early fall. I think it's due to being a Scorpio born in November 1954. After the winter comes spring though. Looking at my latest addition to my quarter collection makes me reflect upon years past and think about the beauty of the spring season. Although it's going to be more difficult this year due to situations beyond my control, I will still enjoy watching the bushes and trees start their greening for sure. You know, it's always been the same with me. My first 6 and a half years of life, I was a country boy. Mama would never let me pick the tomatoes, but I could sit in between the rows of potatoes and dig them out of the ground. I could pick the cucumbers, carrots, beans and strawberries when they came in season. The picture in this blog is of me standing by the edge of the garden circa 1959.
