1981 Proof Set...Double Bonus

Coins-United States | slybluenote

This is the last of the "bonus sets". When I ordered the 1979, the 1980 and 1981 sets were included. In 1981 I was thinking about rotating back to the United States from Belgium. General Bernard Rogers had replaced General Haig as SACEUR and would soon be rotating back also. My father-In-law had developed heart problems and was thinking about a 5 way by-pass surgery, so this was a situation that was also on my mind at this time. I had been on leave and found that there was a position opening up in 1982 at Hancock Air Base in N. Syracuse, N.Y. It had been the longest that my best friend had been away from home. My ETS (expiration of time in Service) was also approaching soon and I knew General Maddox who had come from the DIA and asked him to perform the ceremony to reenlist for the position in N.Y. and he agreed to do it.

A Major Change

Back in 1977 I met the young lady that would change my life. I was 23 and had never owned a car, so I bought a blue 1973 Ford Capri. I had a break in service and realized that if we got married; which we did in 1979, I would need a job to support our new life together, so I re-entered the military. I was stationed at Ft. Devens, Ma. and would drive the 8 hours to Central New York on Friday night and then back to Ft. Devens late Sunday night after watching football with my future father-in-law. She was only 17, so I did make a promise to my in laws that I would ensure she finished high school, which she did at S.H.A.P.E. , Belgium at the American high school there.

Sisters Du Jour

Coins-United States | slybluenote

As I mentioned in earlier blogs, I obtained a 1961 P/D/Silver proof set and a 1962 P/D/Silver proof set for my coin collection. The 1961 is for my best friend, who I married and the 1962 set is for her sister who is also my friend and family. As LongBeard pointed out in my last blog, and as you see in the pictures, the silver set came from Philadelphia vice San Francisco and this is true for both years. I bought these sets without first looking at the coins, because I think Daniel Malone is an honest dealer. His website can be found athttps://portsmouthcoinshop.com/, which is where I picked these coins up from.
