Australian Silver Kookaburra Series

| CheerioCoins

A few days ago I did a blog on the Australian Silver Koala Series made by the Perth Mint. As I explained, the Perth Mint has made many cool and unique bullion coins. A lot of people said that they love the Australian Silver Kookaburra coin series that was also done by the Perth Mint so I decided to take a look at it and do a blog on it!

The Australian Silver Kookaburra coin series was first minted at the Perth Mint in 1990, 19 years before the start of the Silver Koala Series. The 1 oz Kookaburra coin is the one I will mostly talk about. It has a face value of $1, has a mass of 31.1 g or 1 troy oz, a diameter of 40.6 mm or 1.52 in, a thickness of 2.98 mm or 0.117 in, a composition of 99.99% Silver/Ag, and has been minted from 1990 to present day.

The series began with Raphael Maklouf's right-side portrait of the monarch on the obverse. In 1999, the obverse design changed to Ian Rank-Broadley's portrait of the monarch. In 2019, Jody Clark's design of Queen Elizabeth II has persisted for now.

The coins were .999 fine silver until in 2018 they made it .9999 silver, increasing the purity of the silver. Starting in 2008 they started adding a "P" mint mark for the Perth Mint. In 2015, it was the 25th Anniversary of the series so they used the original kookaburra design and made the date 1990 and 2015. In 2020, it was the 30th Anniversary of the series so they added both the dates 1990 and 2020.The Silver Kookaburra are issued in 1 oz, 2 oz, 10 oz, and kg sizes today.

As for pricing, the 1 oz ones can go for around $30-$80, the 1 kilo ones can go for around $750-$850, the 2 oz go for around $50-$100, the 10 oz ones can go for around $400-$500.

It is really known and loved by numismatists everywhere. This series is really nice and it has a great history around it. The kookaburra is a unique animal that looks great on coins. My favorite design goes to the 2019 one because it has such a pretty sunset in the back. Thanks to everyone who shared it with me and I encourage you to ask questions!

Thanks for reading my blog and have a great day!
