There's Gold In Them There Hills!

Coins | Long Beard

The subject of this week's blog struck like a hammer falling from a ladder on the head. Which, by the way, nearly happened while remodeling. Here's your sign. Anyway, that in question arose while watching the movie National Treasure with my best half and her son this past weekend. Whether one collects coins or not, who doesn't dream of finding treasure? Every few years or so stories emerge of someone finding as much, whether it be a few coins or notes discovered in an old home or a stash dug from the ground. In most cases by accident or pure luck as some might term it. And then there are those purposely hidden in secrecy for a variety of reasons still waiting to be brought to light. The subject of this week's blog. Enjoy!

Research and Coincidence

Coins-United States | Long Beard

Often times there are strange occurrences which seem to reveal themselves in the pursuit of research. Mostly these lead to other topics, however this one just so happened to make an appearance on a television show. That show was the STARZ network series American Gods which airs on Sunday nights at 10 P.M EST. Now mind you, the subject research began a little more than a week ago and the episode in question was a new one so knowing before hand to get an idea for a topic is out of the question. After all, instances such as these are where the author finds inspiration to write. Anyhow, the opening of the show pertained to the 1893 World's Colombian Exposition held in Chicago where a half-dollar struck by the mint in commemoration was tossed into a tin cup outside of an exhibit. Looked to be a high grade example, along with a few other coins of the day. The episode will need to be watched again, since there may have been an Isabella Quarter in there. The topic of this week's blog. Enjoy!

A Popular Forum Topic

Coins-United States | Long Beard

With time being a precious commodity as of late, the subject of this weeks discussion came about from two sources. The first arose while scrolling the pages of the Heritage website looking for potential new purchases. This lead to the second, thoughts of the numerous posts on the coin forums asking for information on a particular close/wide AM Lincoln Cent, of which there are several known dates. More often than not, these questions are posed by new collectors not quite familiar with this highly sought after variety. So for those unfamiliar with the correct diagnostics, this short blog should explain things. Enjoy!

The Only True American Coin

Coins-United States | Long Beard

Before getting to the discussion of this week's blog, allow me to apologize for the slight hiatus of the early start of a new year. In the busyness I've had little time to research, much less write about, an interesting subject. That said, and the fact behind the title. When one mentions the words Indian or Buffalo, in some shape or form America comes to mind. No other has ever embodied as much on both sides of the same coin as does the Indian Head Nickel. Or "Buffalo" as it's aptly referred. Enjoy!
