The Many Varieties of Draped Bust Half Cents

The US Mint has multiple varieties for every coin, in every year of mintage, whether they be errors, intentional changes, or even drastic changes in design. The Draped Bust Half Cent is no exception. Here I have illustrated the five major varieties, two on the same coin but on different sides. They are the 1804 Spiked Chin, The Stemless Wreath Draped Bust Half Cent (coupled with) The 1804 Crosslet Four Half Cent, the 1802/0 half cent and, finally, the weight differences caused by the Planchet Shortage.

The Large Cent

One time, in 1793, there were large cents. A large cent is a coin, commonly now called a"penny", about half dollar size.A large centwasused because, in the time it was made, the US mint made all coins with metal worth the face value. It took much copper, about 264 grains and later, 208grains, to make a cent.
