Involving Kids in the ANA

Coins | Kevin Leab

About 2 weeks ago I signed my son Andrew up for an ANA membership.....He is 19 years old and has Cerebral Palsy from a birth injury.. He loves looking at old coins with me and I talk to him about them and their history. Even though he is nonverbal I can still tell that he has an interest because he pays attention to me. I am all about involving our children in the world of numismatics and I believe that it should be heavily promoted and the National and local levels....and I believe they all do a fantastic part in it. I very much want to get this jumpstarted in our local club but they haven't met since last March when this Covid thing started.....but I will once they get back together.. Our local club consists of mainly older retied men, about 8 of them in total. I'd love to raise awareness locally in my community. I very much enjoy doing this with my son. When my grandkids get a little older I will try to get their interest and buy them a membership also.....in reality, that's where my collection will end up anyway.

Wiping a tear from my eye as I read your blog. I so wish you two could make it to Pittsburgh in May so you could participate in the PAN KidZone, I think that would be the highlight of the entire show.

Kevin Leab

Level 4

I'll certainly look into it. Do I have to be a PAN member to attend? If not then I'll join! Hopefully we'll get to see you there.

That's awesome to encourage not only your son but other youth as well. Which has proven challenging in today's digital world where their attention seems to be focused. As contradictory as it sounds I have seen an increase in youth participation, not only on this website but others, which is encouraging and likely connected in some way with the pandemic. My only hope is that those who have found the hobby continue. Even a small percentage.

Level 4

Absolutely.....Even if I get one kid out of ten to gain interest thats good enough for me

I hope you bring in many young collectors. There are more than you would think "hiding" but if a club shows interest in getting new, young members they will surely join. Good Luck!

I believe too that they're hiding somewhere. I don't even think the local schools have a coin club

It is great you get to share your hobby with your son. Hopefully, in the future your grandkids becomes interested in the hobby. I have a couple grandkids are some what knowledgeable of the hobby since they earn a Boy Scout merit badge in coin collecting.

Andrew is blessed to have you as his father, and you are blessed to have him as your son. Having a like interest between you like numismatics is a great way to strengthen your relationship. This hobby has a strange way of affecting people in that manner. I think your local club will welcome Andrew with open arms, and Andrew will give your club a much-needed shot in the arm with his youthful enthusiasm. I can only imagine how my club might react to Andrew and think that we also need someone like him to reinvigorate things. BTW, welcome to the ANA, Andrew!

Thank you!!! I can't wait to take him to a show someday

You my friend have a noble soul. Andrew shines with his love. I am so please you included a picture of him. I know that personally this hobby has helped me a ton when I start feeling sorry for myself. Disabled. I hope your club will come along. Other than that I don't know what to say. I was knocked down yesterday by my problem. This is one of the first things I saw today. You and Andrew make me feel better after seeing and reading your blog. NEVER GIVE UP. You and your family have my prayers. Thanks

I'm glad that you all share your hobby together. That's a really nice thing to have in common. You have a great goal. Perhaps while the clubs aren't meeting you could volunteer to talk at schools about the hobby

Kevin Leab

Level 4

That would be a great idea and I believe I'd like to do that...Unfortunately our schools are currently closed. Maybe when they get going again I'll call them.

What a great looking kid. Probably better looking than you. The love you can see in every aspect of his face. It shines through like a star at night. Who could want anything more. A gift that what he is. When I came here they sent my mom back to Ireland. A month later they called my dad to the army. I had no one. They found a long lost cousin. She had polio. She raised me like her own. I will message the rest I didn't know.what polio was.. I learned a new respect for this woman. And disabilitys. Never thinking I would become disabled. The kids are the standard bearers for this hobby. They will become the keeper of the coins. So it's important we help them at every level. . Thanks.for.sharing . I enjoyed it so much.

Our coin club is meeting again and we have about 25 active members at each meeting. Around 45 total memvers. We do have a few YN. The recent passing of Kevin Tyler our 2020 president has set us back in all areas. Getting youth involved is important for sure. Your son will enjoy coins so much.

Kevin Leab

Level 4

Thank you Golfer...I'm very sorry for your loss.

Thank you Stumpy! That means alot to me. Family definitely takes care of family.. thats my view also. I really hope that I can inspire a young collector as much as I have my son.

You have my respect, empathy and admiration! It is a life long commitment of love, patience, understanding and support from both your son's interaction to you and your support group, be they family, friends, whatever. I never faced a challenge as complex as yours. I was able to help my family when they became ill. You will understand this lesson my Dad taught me when I was a kid, "Family, takes care of Family". I hope that when Covid winds down, your coin club will be able to start a program or simply sponsor time toward some young person who would appreciate this hobby we all love. Keep on keeping on! Nuff Said!
