My 1955 Proof Set

| Kevin Leab

I started collecting in 1979 and as a 14 year old boy with a minimal allowance, except for what little I made working in the local orchards, I couldn't afford much.. It didn't help matters when the Hunt brothers came about and tried to corner the silver market..that made owning nice silver coins nearly impossible. I've always had my eyes on Franklin Half dollars and the very first coin that I purchased was a proof 1963 Franklin Half.. I still to this day don't know where its at.. anyway, The 1955 proof set caught my eye as a young Numismatist and being that I couldn't afford it myself, asked my parents to buy it for me as a Christmas present. Well, I got one that year with the original cardboard box and all... Years later I ended up selling it to help pay bills and I felt bad since that day. I decided about 6 months ago to put together my own 1955 Proof Set but certified and graded individually by PCGS. I know it cost me more to do it this way but at least they're protected..I just wanted to share them with you....

Well done! 1955 is the first year, or last dependent upon how you look at it, that my set run as issued goes. From 1936 to 1954 I'll be shooting for graded pieces. Thanks for the motivation that I needed on this long thought of plan.

You're welcome! I'd love to put together proof sets starting from 1948...only because I love Franklins and it would be more affordable than trying to put together anything earlier than that.

Awesome set of 1955. All certified is great. Wish the price of silver would go up to 50 dollars an ounce soon ! Where is that 1963 Franklin ! You need a certified 1963 proof Franklin now, unless you already have one. Nice 1955 coins.

Thanks everybody! I love this group!

You have great parents. Wonder what the '55 proof Set cost back in 1979?

That's a very nice set! Except for the 64+, all 65 or higher. You'd be hard-pressed to buy an original set, have them graded, and have them all come out as good as these.

I really love Ben Franklins, they circulated when I was a kid. I completed my set this year but they aren't all as nice as yours. Great coins, congrats and thanks for sharing the story

Beautiful set. You did what you had yo do back then. Now you made it right. I really like the Franklins. I remember spending them as a kid. You really had something when one or two of those babies was in your pocket. Great job. Thanks.

Really beautiful set! You should be proud to own these in your collection! Thanks for sharing them ; )

That franklin is a real beauty, old holder too. They should be protected for many generations. Hopefully you find that 63 franklin half. Thanks!

A beautiful set, you should be very pleased!!!! I remember my next door neighbor's dad had a whole coffee can worth of silver coins when the Hunt Brothers were doing their thing, I was very jealous. (:
