Q&A #2: @Longstrider

Young Numismatists Exchange | thatcoinguy

Hello fellow YNs and YNH!

Today, I post my second blog in the Q&A series! This one being with the ANA VAM man, @Longstrider! Man, the work this guy does. He has the second most points of anybody on the blog, and deservedly so. He comments every time, and is supportive of all collectors, young and old. Let's get to know him!

Me: How old are you?

Longstrider: I'm a ripe 67 years old. I know, hard to believe.

Me: What is your favorite coin?

Longstrider: My favorite coin is the Peace Dollar. I like what it represents and the Italian history involved in the designer and his model wife, Anthony and Teresa de Francisci. One should check out the original, Broken Sword design, to get the full effect.

Me: What is your favorite VAM?

Longstrider: That is a tough one. I like them all. I usually go for the Peace Dollar Top 50 and Elite 30. Those are VAMs that can be seen with the naked eye, no magnification required. Of those I would, reluctantly, pick for the Top 50: 1922-P VAM-5A3 Scar Cheek, Tripled Olive Leaves, Die Gouge Die Break Hair. You kinda get a three for one deal. One the Elite 30 I would go: 1924-P VAM-1G Die Break Near Top of Right Wing. I love a good die break in the wing.

Me: What is your favorite collecting story?

Longstrider:My favorite collecting story is when I was bidding on a couple of 1909 S VDB Lincoln Cents on Heritage. I say a couple because I dropped some low bids on one of them that I figured I couldn't win and a realistic bid on the one I thought I had a good chance of winning. You guessed it, I won both. Oh well. If it's worth owning one type of coin, it's worth owning two, my coin dealers saying.

Me: When and how did you start collecting?

Longstrider:Like many, I got into coins from gifts of Morgan's and Peace dollars from my grandparents. I was born in 1953 so these big babies were still around for there face value.

Me: Any advice for future collectors?

Longstrider:My advice for for Y.N's and future collectors is this: Never give up. There will always be another auction or sale of that coin you want. Never quote Wiki.. Make a budget and stay in it. Sometimes you will just go for it so don't punish yourself if you overspend once in a while. Don't be afraid to branch out from you original interest. My collecting MPC has led me into JIM, Philippian Guerilla Money, POW Chits and now Italian Service Units Chits. Collect what YOU like. Lastly HAVE FUN and learn!

Thanks so much @Longstrider for answering my questions, and thanks all of you for reading the blog.

Keep collecting,

thatcoinguy.

P.S. Shout out to @Longstrider's wife, who is also a collector of coins and currency!

P.P.S. Hey Mike! If you are up for it, will you be next up? Just shot me a message if you are interested.

I resemble ALL of the above remarks! I also am 67, I just don't know if I'm as "ripe" as my buddy.... ;-) ! I consider Longstrider a good friend along with Kepi also ! I'm just glad that I could assist him in getting that raise on his allowance....LOL Thanks for posting a great blog. I'm looking forward to reading about Mike next!

Way to go my friend. . We all know if it's a VAM there is only one man. He has also helped many people advance in this hobby. He gets a question about a coin he does his best to answer it. He is the go to guy. We have allot of 67 year olds. I will be 68.! You picked a great guy. He is truly a great friend . When I got here years ago he reached out to me! Keep up the great work!
