Roll Searching: A Beginner’s Guide

Collecting Tips | thatcoinguy

Hello fellow YNs and YNH!

Today's topics is roll searching! I have touched upon the subject in previous blogs, but here it is in full detail!

Roll searching has been around since the first coin roll was invented. It is a fun, affordable, and interesting way to acquire all sorts of interesting coins for your numismatic accumulation. Today, I am going to attempt to go into detail in the different kinds of this activity.

Design Searching: This type is by far the easiest of all the types of roll searching. You simply look for the designs of previous versions of the denomination. It can be as easy or as hard as you want in to be, just remember that the more rolls you search, the more coins you will find. Here is a list of one coin of each denomination design you might find in rolls from most common, to least common: wheat cents, Susan B. Anthony Dollars, Buffalo nickels, Mercury dimes, Franklin half-dollars, Standing Liberty Quarters. Nobody I know has ever found anything but Washington quarters in rolls, but if they were to find a different design, it would probably be the Standing Lib.

Precious Metal Searching: Most numismatists know that quarters, dimes, and half dollars made before 1965 are silver. But the coin beginners DON'T know about is the silver nickels. All nickels made 1942-1945 are 35% silver. Also, all half dollars 1965-1970 are 40% silver. If you want success more that silver amount, the silver nickel is the easiest to find in rolls.

Error/Variety Searching: This is the most time consuming of all the roll searching strategies. You will want a good magnifying glass (probably 7x to 10x), a good light source, a error reference book (I recommend "Strike It Rich with Pocket Change"), and (optional) a scale that can go up to a tenth of a gram. Errors can be found in any denomination, and can be worth anywhere from $1, to a king's ransom.

Thanks for reading the blog, roll search, and have a great day!

P.S. The next update will be a big one with TONS of cool roll searching finds.
