An Epic Nickel Box Hunt | Coin Update #40
Hello all!
Last weekend I picked up and hunted through another nickel box, and it turns out that it was my best one ever!
Also, while I was at the bank, I ordered three more half dollar boxes, which I plan to save for hunting on Christmas day-so keep an eye out for my next blog sometime after Christmas with the finds!
So, while I was going through the nickel rolls, several different awesome finds popped out to my great surprise. First, while I was looking for enders, I found a roll with a really dark ender coin, and amazingly, I saw a reverse with a P mintmark! Once I opened the roll, I found out it was a 1943-P war nickel in terrible shape (but hey, silver IS silver). This was the first time I have ever found a silver coin on the end of a roll (in any denomination) and the first time I have found a war nickel ender. Next, earlier in the box, I found a decent 1923 buffalo with a fairly easily legible date. Although it has a mintage of around 35 million, this buffalo is still in awesome find in the wild (pun not originally intended) and is only my 7th buffalo nickel find. A few more not-very-interesting finds (like common older Jeffersons and a few Canadians) and I come to the moment when as I was about half way through a roll, looking at each coin, I looked up to grab the next one, and to my great surprise I saw a V-nickel reverse staring up at me! I quickly snapped a photo before I checked the date-1907. Although 1907 V-nickels have a mintage of nearly 40 million, they are still a rare find in circulation (as with any V-nickel).
Now, once I had found these three awesome finds (war nickel, buffalo, and v-nickel) I thought to my self something like “why couldn’t this box also produce a first year Jefferson?” I was thinking this because even with all of the boxes of nickels that I have hunted so far, I have never come across a 1938 Jefferson nickel. Guess what! Near the end of the box when I thought that the cool finds wouldn’t continue, I pick up a nickel out of a roll by the reverse side (the reverse design elements looked fairly newer so I thought it was probably just a nickel from the 80s) and flip it over only to see the date that I had wished to see only moments before-1938! Although it has a scratch and a mintage of nearly 20 million, this first-year Jeff is still an awesome find for me-plus I needed it for my folder.
Also during the hunt, I found two pretty cool lamination errors-a 1941-S and a 1960
Anyways, thanks for reading my blog, enjoy the pictures, and have an early Merry Christmas!
P.S. I tried to add more info about the coins (i.e. their mintages) per request :)

A Liberty Head Nickel! Wow! I’ve only found one silver ender, which was a 40% JFK half in my first ever half dollar box.

Amazing how you can find so many old nickels still out there. I guess the public thinks since there's no silver in them, it's not even worth searching pocket change.
