Recent Pickups and Finds | Coin Update #39

| CoinHunter

Hello all!

Today I have lots of stuff to share, including some purchases from my LCS and some coin roll hunting finds, so let's begin!

Let’s start with the recent purchases. A week or so ago, I went to my local coin shop and looked around for a while, purchasing 2 things for my type set, and a couple more just to add to my collection. I was able to pick up a nice VG-10 1854 seated quarter for $39 to fill the seated quarter with arrows hole. I also grabbed a nice 2009 cent proof set (just the 4 2009 proof cents) for $8 to fill the 2009 cent holes on the sixth page of my album (rather than the uncirculated versions), sorry, but I don’t have picture of the proof cents for now. I also picked up my first blue Ike (a 1972-S) for $15 (noticed it has a slight DDO). Lastly, I picked up two crazily off-center Lincoln cents for $5 each (which I thought was a splendid deal).

Now, what did I hunt and what did I find? I actually did my largest coin order yet: 3 boxes of half dollars. It took me about three days of free-time to hunt all of the coins. As for the finds, unfortunately I didn’t end up finding any silver (I still don’t understand why), but I did find several NIFCs that I needed for my collection, along with some other cool stuff. I found 2 strike-throughs: a 1991-P with some grease around the portrait, and a 1971 with something big right on Kennedy’s head. I found 4 keepable die clashes-a really obvious 1971-D, and then a not obvious 1971-D, 1973-D, and 1971-D (probably can’t see the last three in the photo). I found an escapee 2014-D high relief (they only sold these in a special UNC set-only 2 million minted!), a holed 1994, a nicely toned 2005-D, and a toned 1977-D. Lastly, I found a 1972-P and an 1983-P No FG.

Here is a list of what coins are in the pictures:

#1 1854 Seated Quarter

#2 1972-S Blue Ike

#3 Dateless Off-center cents

#4 Strike-throughs

#5 Die clashes: 1971-D, 1971-D, 1973-D, and 1971-D

#6 2014-D high relief, 1994-P Holed, 2005-D toned, and 1977-D toned

#7 1972-D No FG

#8 1983-P No FG

Thanks for reading this blog, enjoy the pics, and have a great day!

P.S. I recently ordered a Minelab Vanquish 440 metal detector to upgrade my Bounty Hunter. And I will probably write a blog about it hopefully with some coin finds.

Nice pick ups. Don't get P.O'ed but I want to say this and it isn't personal. Please, all you roll hunters out there, please tells us more about your coins. I am a little tired of reading just about your roll finds. This is from a fellow roll hunter. Thanks.

Good finds,. Is the 1971 Kennedy half dollar shown on the first picture an error or is it just worn out?

I believe the large dent-looking thing is a strike-through. Basically, some foreign substance (most likely a glob of grease in this case) was on the die when this coin was struck.

Someday you will find the holy grail. You do excellent in your hunting. Try and pick up the Kennedy 1970 D. It's a key date. You do better than some authors on the site. I think you should write a paper on your finds. It should be interesting!!

I hope so. Thanks.

You're welcome! Thanks.

Most of the NIFCs now are just general circulation. The mint dumps the extras into circulation every year.

Good to know. Thanks.

Blue Ikes are great. They’re probably the best condition Ikes you can get for cheap besides the proof ones.

CoinHunter

Level 5

They sure are!

Nice finds! Can you remind me how much the no FG costs?

CoinHunter

They are worth a little more

Oh. I thought they were worth more.

CoinHunter

Thanks for the comment! They aren't worth much at all-and I didn't buy them-I found them.
