Colorized and Themed Coinage

The purpose of the post is to get a sense of what collectors think about colorized or themed designs for coinage. The vast majority of posts or comments to them from the many forums I scroll through on the internet seem aimed in the negative manner. Complaints mostly. Yet I do not feel this is accurate in how they are really viewed.

Allow me to explain what it is that I mean. For several years, countries such as Canada and particularly Australia, have offered annual commemoratives representative of comic book characters, fantasy theme and the like. Some colorized or ruthenium plated. Obviously there is a growing market for these as is evident with the United States Mint's introduction of the Basketball Commemorative.

As an older collector, while I personally do not find them appealing, I accept their creations nonetheless. What I'm requesting through a forum post are the thoughts from those who collect these type of coins. More so from younger collectors, perhaps new to the hobby altogether.  Again, from a personal perspective, whether colorized, theme oriented or meant for circulation, the enjoyment and satisfaction gained are the same within the coin hobby.

I think they are awful. The last thing I want is something that looks like a child has drawn all over.

I like to look at them. As far as collecting them no chance.

I'm far from a young collector but I do have a few of them. No themed coins but some subtle Canadian ones. If they catch my eye I will consider the art factor. Thanks.

I have collected a few of the colorized coins produced by Canada, they have quite a number at this point, I also have two more from Japan.  I like them if they are not commercially motivated like Star Wars or Spider-Man colorized coins.  If they are colorized to show Fall Colors in Canada or a famous bridge in Japan, I am OK with that.

Not a fan of colorized coins. Maybe something will come along I like. Would make a good specialty gift for someone if the topic and design fit the recipient.  There more novelty items.

I only have one medal that is colorized out of the 3 that I own. I recently purchased it because of the theme.  I don't own any colorized coins. I just don't think they look right. Medals are a different story for me.

I'm sorry I did forget this would be a huge money maker for the mint. That's why the sale of these new colorized coins is a test.Instead of paying 55.00 95.00 will be the new low!!

Colorized coins from Pro mints look very good. Ones from places like Littleton Coin Company look like a cheap sticker was printed out and applied to the coin. Whatever the case, the mint has gone crazy and is now looking like the RCM.
