Hello everyone! I was going through some quarters today when I found a 2003 Illinois state quarter. The thing is, it has a rim that looks silver and appears to be slightly thicker. The surface of the coin also looks strange, and when I drop it onto the ground it makes the sound a silver coin makes. What do you think? It weighs 5.73 grams.

Yikes! Don't drop it on the ground any more. What should it weigh?

It's supposed to weigh 5.67 grams. I think it is silver plated. And don't worry, I am just lightly dropping it on the table

Who would silver plate the quarter? Did some company silver plate quarters and this one made it's way into circulation. Amazing what turns up in circulation. Keep that one in the miscellaneous album.

I just found out, it is actually a platinum plated quarter! I heard that they made a bunch of platinum quarters, and a lot of people bought them, thinking they would be worth something. But they didn't, so a lot of people just cracked them out for pocket change
