Hi guys, any idea how to grade a coin that is worn on the rim? I have no idea. I’m not sure if you can.

Easy you send it to a grading service. They will grade every part of the coin. We also have not been lot of these coins so a few pictures would help us. But you cent grade them. Only a service. Mike.

I am sorry my spell check did work for a while. I will try again. Send it to a grading service. They grade all coins and then slab them for protection. That's better. Sorry Mike.

01-9 is the listing # in the JDNA catalog. It is just an easy way of referring to the catalog. For instance, the Krause catalog lists it as Y-5 under the listings for Japan.

I wonder if the coin was mounted for jewelry, that would explain the damaged edges. In that case, the coin would probably only receive a Details grade. I have a Silver Yen that had been mounted on a bolo tie. It has damage on the reverse due to the mounting.

Leo, Mine was mounted from the center of the reverse side, so there is no rim damage, jI know it was mounted because I was given it as a gift and later removed it from its mounting. So, this piece of jewelry will not help you in determining the cause of your rim issues. Your picture still seems to show rim damage due to mounting as all the other elements of the coin look strong.
