Larger banks will have Yen currency available but the smallest bill may be 1000 Yen and that is about 10 Dollars.  Coins are made in 500, 100, 50, 10, 5, and 1 Yen denominations, There are also higher denomination coins, but they are all commemoratives in Silver or Gold, you may be able to find someone on Ebay selling inexpensive Japanese coins.  I have some I could give you but I Would Not want to know your address unless your parents were involved and approved ahead of time.

Check eBay. You can usually find them in lots of 5-10 random yen coins for a couple dollars. Also, ask any numismatist friends have if they have any they would be willing to trade you.
