Many people refer to the Presidential, Innovation, and Sacagawea dollars as “Golden Dollars”, due to their manganese brass cladding giving them their “golden” appearance. But the truth is that these coins contain absolutely no gold. Or at least, that is for most of them.
In the middle of World War II, the United States government desperately needed copper for ammunition and other military equipment. The War Production Board was refusing to allocate enough copper to the United States Mint to produce enough cents for the year. The Mint began its own experiments on alternative materials such as steel. At the same time, the Mint invited private companies to test out various types of plastics in case all metals were unavailable due to the war.
Collecting & Investing Strategies for Walking Liberty Half Dollars by Jeff Ambio is a great book about the Walking Liberty Half Dollar Series. The book begins with a short introduction to different collecting strategies one may go about, such as type sets, registry sets, mint mark and date sets, and the difficult set of proofs. The book then dives into a brief history of the Walking Liberty Half, such as the design process and distribution of these wonderful coins. The majority of the book consists of values by grade, in addition to estimated survival in each grade and significant examples of these coins, with their realized prices.
Numismatic Forgery by Charles M. Larson is an extremely well written book about counterfeit coins and numismatic forgeries. It dives into how many counterfeit and numismatic forgery coins are created in great detail.

Helen Keller was born to Kate Adams Keller and Colonel Arthur Keller on June 27, 1880 in Alabama. When she was around 19 months old, she became ill from an unknown illness, and became blind and deaf.
A Mighty Fortress: The Stories Behind the 2nd San Francisco Mint by Richard G. Kelly and Nancy Y. Oliver is a great book about the history of the San Francisco mint. This wonderful book begins by talking about the Granite Lady, also known as the 2nd San Francisco Mint in addition to a brief amount on the other active U.S. mints, the Denver Mint, Philadelphia Mint, and West Point Mint. This book gives some context of the time period surrounding the building of the San Francisco Mint before diving into the construction of the mint. Then, the book details the scandal of the mint, and how a mint clerk was accused of losing several thousand dollars. In addition, this book talks about the security features of the mint that prevented a "direct forceful robbery of the Granite Lady in its entire tenure as an operating mint (Kelly and Oliver 50)." Next, the book talks about the coins made here and the rarities of 1893 and 1894. Later in this book, the authors wonderfully detail how coins went missing from the mint. I found it interesting how the mint managed to survive the 1906 earthquake and fire that destroyed San Francisco. At the end of the book, it talks about how the mint became a museum that closed and became abandoned. The last pages list the superintendents of the 2nd San Francisco Mint.
