A Great Surprise

| Big Nub Numismatics

Every day after school, I bring whatever is in the mailbox into the house. This past Wednesday, I received an envelope from the ANA that was beefier than normal. I was not expecting anything from them, and I couldn't wait to open it. When I finally got inside, I opened it and found a letter from the ANA along with a curious bit of currency. It was crisp, and had a beautiful design of an oil refinery. It had a ten shilling denomination. When looking at the country of origin, I had never heard of it before, and I do not think many people have either. The country of Biafra. This little known country was built, and destroyed in turmoil. After ethnic tensions were almost to a boil, a small region in Nigeria decided it would be best to break away from their mother country. They declared their independence from Nigeria in mid 1967 and thus started a civil war between the former and current Nigerians. With Biafra being just a newly founded republic, they were squashed easily and ruthlessly. Biafra being so new had not formed tight relations with any country, and they relied heavily for other African countries, although some other countries did help and trade with them. Nigeria ordered, and created a blockade of all resources coming into Biafra, including food and clean water. Great Britain also helped with Nigeria on this matter. Within a few years of the war over two million people had starved to death from the blockades. With so many people suffering, the current government officials issued a surrender to Nigeria. Although they had won, Nigeria treated the former independent nation with disrespect putting them under much of the same conditions as earlier in the war. All in all, this failed independent country lasted less than three years, and is another story in a failed attempt to create a free country.Fast Facts about Biafra:1. Biafra during its reign had three capital cities, two lasting less than a year, and none of their capital cities were the largest.2. Biafra's original president ran off to the Ivory Coast towards the end of the war to avoid Nigerian prosecution.3. Although a subsumed state now, a small Biafran government still exists, though it has little power and it borderline illegal inside Nigeria. It's Amazing what a small country found inside a letter can do.https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/republic-of-biafra-proclaimedhttps://www.britannica.com/place/Biafra
