Australian Silver Koala Coin Series

| CheerioCoins

The Silver Koala coins series is an Australian coin series that were minted at the Perth Mint in Australia. The Australian mint has minted many different types of interesting coins. These include many animals including the wombat, kangaroo, and the kookaburra. They have also made coins relating to pop culture like the Star Wars coins and the Marvel coins. Most of these were minted at the Perth Mint.

In my opinion, one of the coolest coins they have made is the Silver Koala series. As many of you already know, I'm into the SIlver Panda series too. It is a set just like this but is minted in China. I love these two series because they have cute wildlife which I love and are silver which makes them affordable, unlike gold or platinum bullion coins which go way over my budget.

The Silver Koala's have been minted since 2007 to today. They have a face value of 1 dollar. A mass of 31.1 g or 1 Troy oz. They have a diameter of 40.6 mm or 1.52 in and have a thickness of 4.0 mm or 0.157 in. The edges are Reeded and the coins composition is 99.99% Ag or Silver. The obverse was designed by Jody Clark and depicts Queen Elizabeth II. The reverse will have a (almost guaranteed) adorable Australian koala bear.

They have been minted in three different sizes/denominations in clouding the 10 oz or $10, 1 oz or $1(which I just talked about), the ½ oz or 50c, and the 1/10 oz or the 10c. All of the sizes besides thr 1 oz were minted in 2008 and the 1/10 oz was minted in 2011.

Prices vary from different dates and sizes. The 1 oz retail is around $28-$32 which is really good since melt right now for silver is around $22.16 an oz right now. The 1 kilo ones are worth around $850-$1,000. The ½ oz ones I couldn't find for retail so I looked on Ebay and saw they were around $25-$35 and the 1/10 oz ones were around $20 but couldn't find a lot of them on Ebay even.

Anyway, each year has a new koala design and I really love this series and see it a lot at coin shows. I hope to soon actually buy one 1 oz one since they don't cost too much.My favorite design is the one from 2021 but I will post photos of a few examples of the designs. Feel free to ask questions because I didn’t cover everything on this blog.

I found something really exciting in rolls yesterday so I will share what that is in a few days but I want to space out my blogs.

Thanks for reading my blog and have a great day!

Australian coins are fantastic, I wish the US Mint had such imagination. I like the Kookaburra series myself.
