Collecting from a distance

Collecting Tips | Russ

As I'm sure most of us are, or at least were, I am a teenager. Being such, it is sometimes difficult to stay actively engaged in the ANA among other activities. But does that make me any less of a collector? Short answer, no. I do get very busy with school and friends and whatnot, but coins are still one of my hobbies. I have found it a rather interesting piece to consider. Numismatics, like many other hobbies, can sometimes take a backburner. I may not attend coin shows, or even frequent the ANA, but as a coin collector, the numismatist in me always inspects the change in a tip jar or donation drive. I want this to be a lesson for everyone, and even some of my fellow YN's. Just because you get busy, you are no less of a collector, and we are always welcome to the ANA, especially YN's (Unless you pull a Jonas Coins, that is, and hack the ANA)

More on dimes

| Russ

Hello, ANA!I need a bit of help from my older numismatists, or anyone experienced in barber dimes.I was wondering if there were any differences in obverse and/or reverse designs of the proof and business strike barber dimes?I tried the net, but turned up empty, so I hoped someone would have knowledge on this.

Authenticating rare dimes

Coins-United States | Russ

Hello, ANA. I need some help.I am going through a collection from a friend of mine and have located what I believe to be a 1916-D Mercury dime. The edges are worn smooth, but under magnification I caught what I believe to be a "D" Mint-mark. I hope you can help me know if it is real or not, like die markers or things like that.P.S. Here are some pictures of the coin in question:P.S.S. I used some filters to enhance its appearance, to make the high points and things stand out, but I included a picture of the unfiltered dime from afar as well, along with an up-close unfiltered one as well.

Hello

| Russ

As I come back out of the shadows, I would first like to say I have not given up on coins, as they still interest me. I got caught up with school and friends and things and never really thought of getting back on here. Lets just say I'll try to post some blog Ideas I've had but never gotten around to, as well as some more stories.

So much for a certified coin dealer...

| Russ

Today, I’d like to share with you a very horrifying dealer tale. Today, I was looking to branch out from my one coin shop and meet others, I started with going to one not too far from my house, the man on the other end chatted with me, then, this is where the fun begins. I asked him about a conversation piece I had, a suspected 1983DDR. I asked him if he could look at it, that’s when he said “I don’t know what that is”. This is when I lightly nudged my parent and told them that we need to go, after we left, I told them the story and they BUSTED OUT LAUGHING. TI hope everyone stays home and safe!Rman

COPPER COINS OF THE USA

| Russ

If you all haven't heard the news, let me tell you. Because of the deadly coronavirus in China, there is a greater demand for copper, but many people are sick, so there is less supply. This has caused the copper market to skyrocket to $0.08 per gram of copper, leaving each copper cent worth about $0.24 and each kilo of copper worth around $83.

The ANA

| Russ

Hello, it is sad to say that the American Numismatic Association has seen a drastic drop in user activity and has resulted in an unprecedented change in user activity. We need to change. As others have said this doesn't make any sense. We have only a few active members who go unappreciated; mike b mokester, SUN and JudeA Longstrider and I are the only exceptions we need to change before the WHOLE COMMUNITY GOES INACTIVE we need to change, and we need to change NOW

MY COLLECTING LIFE

Coins | Russ

About 1 and a half years ago I started to collect pennies. It started when I was at a thrift store and I saw a folder of squished pennies. Then I decided to move things up and collect cents. It started when I bought a 1941 to 1974 Whitman folder and hunted rolls from the bank as instructed. I got more and more serious about my collection and decided to get all Whitman penny albums. I have just gone to coin shows and shops and hunted from there.
