Cool Coins Found In Pocket Change

Collecting Tips | thatcoinguy

Hello fellow YNs and YNH!

Today, I am going to talk about coins in change that are for your collection, that can be found easily. This blog will not cover errors, varieties, etc. Let's hop right into it!

Proofs: If you already read the July Numismatist, you already know what this is about. Many proof coins can be found right in daily pocket change. How they got there is a mystery, but most likely, you will find them due to a group of people that actively buy proof coins from the mint, then release them into circulation to inspire new coin collectors. These can be identified by their proof-like finish, or the S mint mark.

1982 No Mint Mark: This coin is exactly as it sounds. If you find a Roosevelt Dime in circulation, you may have found a valuable coin. (I don't count this as an error. If you do, forgive me).

40% Silver Quarter: Most people know that all Halves, Quarters, and Dimes made before 1965 are 90% silver. But what a lot of collectors DON'T know, is that from 1965-1970, all Kennedy Halves were made of 40% silver. These typically do not bring in much more than melt value, but are worth more than face value, and make sorting through half dollar rolls worth it.

Thanks for reading this blog, and hope you have a great day!

This was a very informative post! I am a "YNH" so I did know this, because of the coins that my step-dad and grandmother left me which were all pre 1964. Thanks for posting!

I think some people also break up their sets so they can submit some of the coins for grading then maybe release the rest to stimulate the hobby.

Good blog. I have an alternative and not so nice reality about how they get into circulation far more alcoholics and addicts raid family collections. I know this as a mental health professional and get some great coins from time to time at convenience store. Patients tell me they do this and family members too.

Nice blog! Ya, proofs and 40%ers are definitely findable in circulation. After all, I have found 6 (I think) proofs and 3 40%ers.

Amazing that some 40 percent halves are still out there? I have a lot of clad halfs to turn in from accumulating them. I know some dealers that do put coins in circulation for the fun of it. We all should let some coins free for others. I plan to soon.

Yeah! I might order another proof set to do just that! Also gonna release some foreign coins as well, for younger children who might like a cool design (and they are dirt cheap as well).

I forgot to say that I have only been able to look at Kennedy's from my bank once. That was because I was behind the guy selling them to the bank. Guess what, He went through them. My bank won't order halves but keeps the ones that customers turn in for me and other collectors. First come and all that..

Nice blog. Some people won't know about the pre64 silver. So well done. Nice hints and reminders. Shows you are excited by roll hunting. Thanks.
