Today is the 226th birthday of the US Mint. How many beautiful, and not so beautiful, coins have been minted since then? How many different denominations and design types?
New book, "1792: Birth of a Nation's Coinage" by Augsburger, Orosz, Smith, is a great reference book.
The coinage of 1792 can be described, nicely, as "quaint." Some are surprisingly attractive, considering their age and the technology available. And some are not!
2017 marks the 225th anniversary of the U.S. Mint. With all the restrikes of old designs, it's too bad the Mint didn't think of re-creating the coins of 1792. The quaint designs would look great, struck using modern technology. A set could have included a silver center cent, a Birch cent, a half disme, disme and the quarter. A replica of the Libertas Americana medal would be a nice addition. A booklet outlining the history of these coins would be enclosed, perhaps including latest auction prices. The holder for the set could resemble an antique board of some sort.
