Dig a little deeper
During my weekly bookstore day, I checked out the section where the coin books are. Not much change in inventory. A bunch of old World coin guides, some Red Books, and a few that did not appeal to me.

Have you updated your want list lately? Good idea. There are always a few coins on that list that are dream coins. Mercury dime collectors want the 1916-D. Lincoln cent specialists want the 1909-S VDB. Type collectors want the small eagle coins. Some want list may never be filled.

As a writer and coin enthusiast, I had to stop and think when I saw the latest question posed in Numismatic News. Was your first coin book a Red Book?
So many coin reference books are available. New research is being done all the time, with new titles being released each month or so.
Yesterday was bookstore day. Even the bookstores are preparing for the holidays, with special gift books for sale, coffee table books, art books.
Dave Bowers' latest book is a must-read for anyone interested in US coins.
Finally, after all these years...I bought a copy of Dave Bowers' wonderful reference book, "A California Gold Rush History." A solid reference and a keeper if ever there was one. An important part of American history is documented in this volume. Collectors, historians, and gold fans would love this book. I don't know why I didn't get this book sooner.
I paid a visit to my local library in search of books for research. I am beginning work on a new novel, science fiction, a departure from my usual. I know SF fans are a great audience, also a tough audience. The science in the written work has to be accurate. This novel takes place among Jupiter's moons, so I spent some time in the Astronomy section.
I have a birthday coming up. Time to take inventory and assess, especially where my writing career is going.
I keep checking every bit of change that comes my way, in the hopes of finding something special. Maybe not a 1916-D Mercury dime, or any Mercury dime. Not a 1909-S VDB cent. But something unusual, like a War nickel or a scarce variety, maybe even a double die cent.
