Yesterday turned out to be a great day for downtown. Hot and sunny, but bearable. Besides the Farmer's Market and a delicious lunch, served by my favorite waiter, there was a long stop at the coin shop.

I know it's special

Some years ago, I attended a World's Fair of Money that featured many special exhibits. Besides the usual array of wonderful collector exhibits, some coins that weren't seen often were displayed. This was the show where the ten 1933 double eagles were shown. There were long lines to see these coins from the time I walked in the door.

My interest in coins dates back over fifty years. I can remember getting Mercury dimes, Buffalo nickels, Standing Liberty quarters, in change. I can also recall many lovely coins for sale that seem like such bargains now.

Finally bought it!

Finally, after all these years...I bought a copy of Dave Bowers' wonderful reference book, "A California Gold Rush History." A solid reference and a keeper if ever there was one. An important part of American history is documented in this volume. Collectors, historians, and gold fans would love this book. I don't know why I didn't get this book sooner.

How can I do this?

Mother was a big fan of my coin writing. She saved copies of my articles. When she died and I was going through her things, I found notes to a story I had written in 2011. That year, I wrote many articles when I was at home recovering from an accident. Mother injured her back at that time, so it was quite a time for both of us.

Collectors wishing to see the 1870-S $3 gold must make a special trip. This unique coin is housed at the ANA's Money Museum. It's on display with a wonderful collection of $3 gold pieces, the Bass Collection. The coins are mounted so it's easy to examine each one.
