Antarctica Five Dollar Bill

Paper Money-World | coinsbygary

This is an add-on to Longstrider's excellent post on the coinage of the British Antarctic Territory.

In addition to coins, the British Antarctic Territory also issued paper money. Interestingly, if you read the fine print on the reverse of the note you will find that it is redeemable in US dollars. It reads as follows:

Return this document by mail to Antarctic Overseas Exchange Office Ltd. , P.O. Box 61, Custer WA USA 98240 for a refund of United States dollars, anytime up to midnight December 31, 2013.

Of course, I can't redeem it anymore but it will make for an interesting topic of discussion the next time my local coin club meets!

Beautiful art and design. Lessons the US BEP needs to take to heart.

Nice to have currency in Antarctica should you want to buy some ice cream there.

Fun blog! Goes great with Longstrider's. ; ) haha I really like the design of Britannia and the Lion. Would that also be considered "Una and the Lion"?

At times it does seem as if Una and Britannia are interchangeable. I'd have to do more research though as Una typically refers to royalty and in particular a princess.

You can get them on E-Bay. I don't remember how much this one cost but it wasn't much.
