US Numismatics Discovery Models - Part 1
The following three models explains the different possible types of US numismatic discoveries. The legend for the models:
Black Circle - Current Documented Knowledge Domain
Blue Triangle - Addition of new knowledge to the Current Documented Knowledge Domain
A discovery is made when new knowledge (Blue Triangle) is added to the Current Documented Knowledge Domain (Black Circle). As a result, the Documented Knowledge domain increased with the new discovery. An example of a knowledge domain is the entire documented Lincoln Cent knowledge database (books, catalogs, etc...). The following examples shows the different ways a knowledge domain is expanded.
Model A - Previously Undocumented Physical Error Example - The initial discovery of the 1995 DDO Lincoln Cent error.
Model A - Previously Undocumented Physical Variety Example - The initial discovery of the 1964 Accented Hair Kennedy half dollar.
Model B - Previously Undocumented Physical Issue - The initial discovery of a pattern.
Model B - Previously Undocumented Physical Variety - The initial discovery of a pattern produced in silver (only copper specimens are known)
Model C - Previously Undocumented Unorganized Grouping - The initial discovery of the Saddle Ridge hoard.
Model C - Previously Undocumented Organized Grouping - The initial discovery of President Eisenhower's personal coin collection (yes...he had a personal coin collection).

Extremely interesting article. Imaging the number of models to reverse engineer Numismatics since the beginning of time?

Good job. It DID make me chuckle a little, too. At myself, for being part of a hobby with such interesting avenues to wander and concepts to ponder.
