A Little Rant By Me
Everyone brace yourself as I go on a little rant here. Is it just me or have the third party coin graders like NGC and PCGS gone TOO far on their labels? It seems all it takes is money to get your own private label. Now I'm all for making a buck but I feel this is cheapening our hobby. It just looks bad. I'm not talking about labels that link the coin to giants in our hobby like Eric P. Newman or Col. Green. I'm talking about "private" labels.I admit, I have bought coins with a label I like but I bought it for the coin. The label was just a nice extra. The list of different labels just for the Silver American Eagle is crazy. I'm going to stop here. Just a small rant. and I'm not picking on that Pawn Shop Show. It's just a good example. Maybe I'm just getting old.

Yeah, they are going a bit overboard, and to echo others I'll say it again "Buy the coin, not the holder."

Coin Collecting should be Coin Collecting, not trying to have the fanciest label on their coins.

I agree completely.

" Buy the coin, not the holder", unless it's in the rare " PCGS Green Regency Holder". : )

You also are paying a lot more for a dinky label! On amazon, people were selling graded baseball hall of fame coins autographed by players for about $300 for the silver dollar.

I don't like the labels either. In fact, I don't even have a single certified coin, and I turned one down on eBay because I thought the tag was over the top; and that was before I read this blog!

I don't like all the label stuff either. It's just plain dumb if you ask me. I also believe it looks very bad for our hobby. I refuse to pay extra for a coin because it was an "early release", or "first day" or even from the "newman collection". It's nice for those who like to show the "pedigree"..... But all in all its the coin your buying, not the label! Why on God's good green (or brown) earth would you pay extra for a label? It's ridiculous!

I appreciate what you are saying, but if it brings people into the hobby, I can live with it.

That's a legitimate rant! I have to agree, the label issue has gotten out of hand. Remember " Buy the coin, not the holder".

I think everyone feels the same way a little bit, but its the big corporations control the market and its the big corporations that make these new labels. nothing we can do but play by their rules other wise fall behind.
