OH CANADA-CANCELLED BY PANDEMIC

Coins-World | Longstrider

The other day I received this kinda cool, kinda sad coin in the mail. Thanks to a fellow member here with strong likes for Canadian coins and The Royal Canadian Numismatic Society, I was told about these unique slabbed coins and was able to order one. As you can see in the photos this is a PVGS Sample slab with a Canadian 2020 fifty cent coin in it. The label states that it's from the Royal Canadian Numismatic Association Convention, this year to be held in Halifax. As is stated on the label, it was "Cancelled by Pandemic". Another one bites the dust.

2020 SAMOA 2 TALA

Coins-World | Longstrider

I picked up an interesting coin the other day I want to share here. It is a 2020 Samoa Silver 2 Tala. It is a one ounce of 99.999 silver, non-circulating but legal tender coin. It caught my eye for a few reasons. First it has an antique silver finish. I always wanted to see one of these in my hand. Next and most important it features a dragon-like reptile on it. I'm a dragon freak.

CINCO de MAYO-GOLD 2.5 PESO!

Coins-World | Longstrider

The other day, Tuesday, 5 May, was the celebration of Cinco de Mayo. Briefly, it is the celebration of the Battle of Puebla in which the hugely outnumbered Mexican Army was victorious in defeating the French and gaining their independence. I love this day and since there were no public celebrations, I did the only thing possible, I bought a coin. I am a collector of all Latin American silver coinage. This day is special so I went for a gold coin instead.

ANTARCTIC 50 PENCE

Coins-World | Longstrider

Now, this is going to be an unusual blog, for me at least. I bought this coin and was all set to blog about it like normal. After getting the photos ready I noticed everything I was going to tell you about the coin is all on the photos. Crazy. I decided to do it this way and talk more about the place the coin is from. Here goes.

KOOKABURRA TO THE RESCUE

Coins-World | Longstrider

Today I would like to share a nice little pick up I got at a resent coin show I attended in Las Vegas this month. Below is a beautiful BU 2008 Australian Kookaburra. This particular year issue is somewhat difficult to find. I feel very lucky to have found it. There was a mintage of only 300,000 which is fairly low for this popular series.

1947 GOLD MEXICAN 50 PESO "CENTENARIO" KM # 481

Coins-World | Longstrider

Below is my specimen of a 1947 gold Mexican 50 Peso coin. This is a very interesting coin to me. It was first minted in 1921 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Mexico's independence from Spain. It is also known as the Centenario. It was minted as a circulating gold coin under the Mexican Reform Act of 1905. This act would be a blog by itself so I will just leave it at that. The coin was made from 1921 through 1947. In 1947 the original mintage was 309,000. However in 1947 Mexico started minting restrikes, as the coin was so popular by numismatists and also investors. There was a mintage of 1,975,654 restrikes in 1947. The mint also made restrikes in the 1990's and 2000's. The 90's coins were made in a prooflike surface and the 2000's were done in a matte finish. My particular coin is a solid 1947, not a restrike.

Well the celebration Dia de Muertos, “Day of the Dead” has ended and I just watched a documentary on the last Emperor of Mexico. I think that means I should show off my latest Mexicans silver coin. The newest piece in my collection of Latin American silver coins is a 1904 Un Peso.
