JOURNAL CLUB : Israel Museum obtains world’s ‘first Jewish coin’
| mrbrklyn
The claim, I think is a little audacious and perhaps not even true. But the article in the Times of Israel, a reputable on line Israeli based newspaper, is an excellent popular press write up on numismatic issues.
https://www.timesofisrael.com/israel-museum-obtains-worlds-first-jewish-coin/
It covers the coin collection at the Israeli Museum in Jerusalem. They have a fine selection of early biblical coins. It quoted famed archeologist and Numismatists Haim Gitler. The coin in the headline is from Cyrus the Great, famed biblical figure, the coin was auctioned by Jonathan Rosen in NYC. But the article doesn't end with just that coin. It continues to discuss multiple types of biblical coins and it is a great read
"We barely have any information or texts describing the Persian period
in Palestine, so almost all that we know comes from these coins,"
well, he forgets the Bible in this quote, but the overall point remains.

BTW - the idea of Journal Club is a wonderful means for educating both young and old collectors. We use it medicine as part of rounds :)

well, that Lion that is pictured above and which is from the article is a magificant example of a coin with an optical illusion which I covered in one of the blogs below. FWIW, these images from articles are from the articles and are either released under an non-comericial limited license or as a sample of a larger work under 102 of the copyright law under fair use.

Very cool article. Thanks for the link. The picture , they have, of the coin is amazing. That big crack drives me crazy. What is inside it? Maybe debris from being buried? Anyhow I enjoyed this blog.
