A Proof Nickel And My Submission to NGC-Hunt Update #4

Young Numismatists Exchange | $tarCollector

Hunt Update #4/Purchase Update

Hey fellow YNs and ANA members,
What did I find today, you ask? Let's start with the lowest denomination, which would be the Cent.

For my finds in the lowest denomination, we have three wheaties(one being a "woodie wheatie"), and a Birth and Early Childhood Lincoln Bicentennial Cent. Why the Bicentennial? Toning. Very heavy toning, which I have not found toning quite like it in rolls. Other than that, little else I would call 'good' finds.

For my Nickel finds we have one. My best luck so far has been with this denomination, as I found silver and now my first circulated proof, a 1974-S with noticeable marks. This is probably about PR-60CAM, with noticeable contact marks and hits. But it is a proof, and a nice one at that. It has good mirrored fields and a nice shine, good high quality details and about 5 full steps, probably my second best find.

But in the title, I mentioned a slabbed Morgan, the one I sent in to get graded at the NMS. I talked to the guy at the NGC booth, who was very helpful. He said it was likely to be graded PL, so I was excited about that. But he also said it might come out Unc. Details because of a tiny patch of improper cleaning. I was going to conserve it, but it was WAY to expensive. Maybe if I had conserved it, it could have received a higher grade, but I didn't. Well, the magic number is...MS-62. No, not a * or a PL, but better than Unc. Details.

Other than that, I've found a few NIFC dollars and halves, but no silver. Oh, back to the Lincoln Bicentennial. It is a 'monster' toned coin. Well, not really, but surprisingly toned for a find in the wild. On the obverse there is some blues on Lincoln himself, and pinks and purples In the field. On the reverse there is even nice toning as well(pictures do not do it justice, so there are none).

And, I am sorry but I have to say that Novice Numismatics and Special Selection, my two 'online newspapers' will not be 'published' monthly anymore. But, to make up for that I will include news in each of my update blogs. The news for today is that the US Mint will not be minting and selling(for over $60 above melt) Morgan and Peace 'commemorative' dollars. If you remember my first blog, it was about the Mint's continuation of these two coins for the next few years. But this move is surprising as they made about 60×1,075,000 or 64.5 million dollars profit, with only six different coins. Add creating costs, the Mint probably made about $50 million from collectors with one coin series. Wow. That is not including every other[overpriced]product from the Mint that year.

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed my blog, as I try to make them lengthy. Also, check out my collection; 'Silver Dollars', so you can see a few coins I added. Thanks for reading,

Well you still received a decent grade for your Morgan. Anything but a details, unless you knew it was. It sure is exciting to send a coin in. As well as EXPENSIVE. Thanks, Nice job.

I would have to agree about the cost. Postage alone is $16 and Handling is $10. But I think it was worth it for that coin.

You have great coins there. I would of loved to see that cent. The Morgan's and Peace dollars are not commemorative coins there a continuation of the set. I enjoyed the blog. Keep them coming!!I like the coins you picked up very nice!

They were supposed to be a one year only commemorative for 2021, but they continued them. So they were commemoratives until the Mint decided to continue them.

Some nice coins you've shared with us. I can relate to toned copper (or any toned coin for that matter) giving trouble showing the true brilliance and beauty when trying to photograph them.

Yeah, you can tell by the whiteness of the design that it is PL, but NGC didn't think so.
