1972-D Eisenhower Dollar Discovery
Hello all, I was going through my Ike Dollars over the weekend (haven't seen many post about these coins) and I thought I would share a coin I feel just might be valuable. The 1972-D Eisenhower Dollar mintage was close to 93 million so I feel it's a common coin, but what makes this coin so unique is it D/D reverse. Before I labeled this coin I studied both a regular 1972-D and then this one which I can't see otherwise besides being a D/D reverse. I noticed that the 1972 Eisenhower Dollar had a lot of different things going on that year with the 3 Types (Type 2 being more sought after), but I feel there are a lot more out there to discover. I would love to get feedback from this wonderful community to let me know if I'm right or just seeing things.

I say that it is a D/D but I've only seen them on pennies, If I was in your shoes I'd send it to be graded, thou its pricy it may be worth it. But go local, manly DONT SEND IT IN THE MAIL!!! Its way to risky these days, other wise I would of sent my 1854 large cent a while ago. I'll be glad to see a new post from you soon!

That's such a cool coin! It looks so shiny and new. I hope that coin really is a error because they can be valuable . Best of luck!

I think its time you looked at the red book. It will tell you all about the Ikes.. How many in the set what ones are clad how many bi-centennial they made and the silver ikes. That are 40% silver.

Smart Alec comment: That Eagle landing looks like he has a box turtle head instead of an eagle head.

I'm not very educated on the Eisenhower dollar but I casually collect them here and there. Thanks for the blog!

I'm seeing doubling in a few of the letters. From my understanding, the type difference is based on the position and/or strength of Cuba as seen on the moon. Also, according to PCGS Facts, Frank Gasparo played around with minor die modifications early in the series, never intended to be released despite being struck as test pieces, but he secretly put some 1971's into circulation. Perhaps there were other years?

Thanks for your comment, I also was wondering if any were produced in 1972?

Still a beauty to behold. You know the moon's silhouette fascinates me. Your coin might have features to make it become heavily attractive marketwise. Best of luck. Nice blog.

I also noticed the moon features when comparing them side by side, very unique coin.

I would send it in to a third party grader. There is multiple letters DD . And visible with the eye.. There very underrated. I think there great coins. The word States and others . I have never seen a DD Ike. I have the set plus the silver . The DD is so obvious . A great coin. Protect it. Thanks Mike

Great looking coin! I like Ike too! Love these big old heavy dollars! I can't really tell about the doubling...it can be tricky to detect.

I like Ike! Not many people necessarily share the sentiment as it relates to the 1971-1978 run of Eisenhower dollars. However, I share the enthusiasm of modern large dollars, and have worked hard at trying to collect all the different versions of Ike dollars. That being said, this is a nice 1972-D. Hard to tell from the pictures if it’s a Type 1 or Type 3. Further, while I see some doubling in the letters, without the coin in hand, it’s hard to say if it’s an actual DDR. Something to look into further, that’s for sure.

Not sure without the coin n my hand BUT the doubling I see in the A of AMERICA looks to be machine doubling. I am far from an expert on this. I hope someone else can help you. Try going to CONECA. I just made the same mistake on a Peace Dollar I bought that I thought had doubling. Nope, machine doubling. Try looking at these links. I hope this helps. http://conecaonline.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/StrikeDoublingFlyer-1.pdf http://www.vamworld.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=2647

I looked at sites you sent me and I still feel about 98% sure that it's a D/D, but I will be sending it off for further examination, thanks.
