Unusual 2022-P Roosevelt Dime

Coins-United States | user_39492

Hello all, today I was at the gas station getting lottery tickets and a couple of other items when the cashier told me my total and she gave me my change back and I noticed something unusual. One of the dimes she gave me didn't look like the other one she gave me so when I got in the car I put it in a napkin until I got home. Looking at it with my loupe I noticed that it wasn't reeded and it also weighed 2.3 grams. With all the great minds here I was hoping someone in the community could help me out, it's a 2022-P also so I would like to think it's a error coin. Thanks again and I also hope if it's not an error, I might still have a chance on lottery, lol.

Either way a nice conversation piece.

Normally, if the coin was old, I would think that the sides were worn down from circulation. But since that’s from 2022, you might have found an error.

Thought I would send a couple of pictures to show weight and measurements, thanks again for everyone's help.

If it measures 17.5mm, it is undersized. Should be 17.91mm. Seems like after-mint damage to me.

At first glance I thought a dime struck on a cent planchet. The Lincoln comes in at 2.5g and 19mm in diameter, the dime at 2.5g and 17.9mm. Being that the obverse and reverse show silver (nickel layer) and the weight/diameter you've provided, I now believe it to be a loose collar strike. What I find somewhat odd is the relative strike quality compared to a thicker than normal dime. Is it worth sending in for verification? I'd check some auction houses/EBAY or specialists in that area before hand. Thanks for sharing you find! Quite interesting indeed.

Dreams, for some collectors, are made of this. Unusual and rare. You just got lucky. It is more than a minting error, is a statistical miracle. Safeguard it for comparison with more others. Best of luck.

Be interesting to learn what happen.

To me it looks like post mint damage :(

Double check the diameter with some vernier calipers. Sometime people fake this error by rolling down the reeding.

It seems you received a nice partial collar, here's a link to a description of what they are and how they happen: https://www.error-ref.com/partial-collar/ It's probably worth a few dollars at most, I personally would pay about a dollar for one at a coin shop. Nice find!

Looks to be some kind of partial collar strike. No idea how rare it is. Take it to a coin store. Good luck.

Looks like partial reeding in the one picture? No idea how rare a coin like this is. Could be a nice find. Keep researching! Good luck on the lottery. I need to buy a lottery ticket.
