No Clue

Coins-World | user_74781

I always loved collecting foreign coins.  I came across this one yesterday.  I don't have a clue where it's from.  I don't remember where or when I got it either.  Does anyone recognize this?
My photography and technology skills are lacking so I apologize for the lame picture.

How long have you had that coin for? I think that it is a Greek coin.

GEORGIOS KARAISKAKES - was a military leader of the Greek War for Independence circa 1827. You can find more on Wikipedia, of course.

Thanks. I was wondering who that person was on the coin. Of course, I can not be lazy and start researching myself. Thanks again. I do like getting information from the knowledge of the people here though.

ELLENIKE DEMOKRATIA - Greek Democracy DRAXMAI - Drachmas 2 The drachma is an ancient unit going back to the first Greek coins c. 500 BCE. It means "handful" and referred to a handful (6) of iron spits. These were what we would call barbecue skewers or shishkabob skewers, for holding food over a fire. They were an early form of trade good currency. Six of them were worth about so-much sliver, like 6 grams. (Later the drachmon got smaller, but back then, it was a hefty 1/5 ounce more or less., like about a US Silver Quarter, but as large as a Dime and thicker, chunkier as a coin.)

Greek coin. Great reference: Standard catalog of world coins.

Krause Publications issues their "World Coins" catalog every year or so, and it's always a great reference. It's about the size of a New York City phone book, but if it ain't there, it doesn't exist.

I believe it's a Greek coin . I don't have a Greek keyboard so I can't spell it out for you. One of the world collectors will have it for you I have two. But I also don't speak Greek. Someone will help you. If your going to collect world coins a book will be very helpful. Mike.
