My Birthday | Coin Update #29
Hello all!
Sorry that it has been so long since I posted a blog. I haven’t had enough to write about for a while because I haven’t had any cool coin roll hunting finds or purchases. Now, I finally do! So let’s begin. If you remember, in my last blog I mentioned that I would be getting a bunch of coins to hunt through: my first ever dollar coin box and two boxes of nickels. You may also remember me mentioning that my bank was limiting customer coin orders to only one box and I hoped they weren’t still limiting orders when I ordered my 3 coin boxes; unfortunately, they were. So I was only able to order the dollar coin box. Luckily, when I picked up the dollar coin box, I was also able to pick up some halves. I was able to pick up 6 cool looking rolls that were twice as long and held twice as many halves as usual. Here is the list of what I found in the dollar coin box: a proof 2009-S John Tyler, a wide rim-near date 1979-P SBA, 2 golden plated coins (found in two rolls one right after the other), 40 NIFCs, and some coins that I have been needing for a long time (Millard Fillmore-D [for the longest time I couldn't find this one, the last circulating coin that I needed for the Presidential Dollars, and I only found one in the entire box!], 1999-D SBA, and other years/mints)
After I hunted the dollar coin box, I went to my LCS and grabbed some coins and some E-z-est coin cleaner (I know it sounds bad, but I was careful, so bear with me!). Here is what I got: a nice 1872 Seated Dime for $13 for my type set, a beautiful AU 1918 Lincoln Cent with a lamination on the reverse for $10, and some coins I picked out of the junk silver bin (I hunted the entire bin!): G 1918-S half, AU/BU 1961 half, BU 1963 half, F/VF 1936 Half, 1936-S quarter, 1942-S quarter, 1948-S quarter, 1954 dime with pleasing golden toning, 1920-S Merc, and a monster toned 1964-D dime.
About the e-z-est, I had some tarnished coins, some were proofs that I picked out of my LCS's junk silver bin and others. See the before/after pics. I think it worked really well! It only took a couple of seconds. Although it works really well for tarnished proofs, it doesn't work well on copper. See the before and after pics:
PS I got some cool birthday presents, including a coin collecting t-shirt and a coin pinger!
Overall, I think I did well! Let me know what you think, enjoy the pics, and have a great day!

Happy birthday! 40 NIFC, wow! When I saw the pic of the Walking Libs, I thought you Got them from the half dollar rolls. I was really jealous for about 10 seconds (I went to the bank today and they didn’t have ANY rolls I haven’t already searched). Agree with Mike, although they DO look better. Congrats on the wide rim! How can you tell of they have been gold plated?

I could tell they were gold plated because they really stuck out like a sore thumb on the edge, it may be hard to tell in the pics, but I am sure they are plated. Thanks!

Great coins, and happy birthday! I'm going to have to side with the other commenters on this one, it's best to not clean coins at all. Even just a light cleaning will become a lot more obvious on a coin after several years. Your type set is coming along nicely!
