RPM?

Coins-United States | user_9894

Today, I was trying out some extension tubes on my Nikon D600 camera. I pulled out a quarter that I received as change today and this is wha I found. A rpm I think. Take a look at the photos and see what you think.

This is a machine doubled mintmark, not a true RPM. Mintmarks had the potential to be re-punched up through 1989, as they were added by hand to each die (not each coin - that would take waaaayy too long!) In 1990, the Mint started including mintmarks as part of the actual coin design, so they were already a part of the die from that point on, and it continues today. So, if this mintmark was truly doubled, you'd probably see some other doubled features as well, based on how strong of a shift is present on your coin. Sorry, it's only worth face value, but don't get rid of it! It's always good to hang on to things like this for reference (nothing wrong with hanging on to machine doubled and damaged coins to learn from, as well as to use to teach others. I teach a class during our Summer Seminar called, "What's In Your Junk?" to help people learn the differences between damaged coins and some sweet, genuine Mint errors.) Don't let any of my information above discourage you - keep on hunting; best of luck! -Sam Gelberd, ANA Numismatic Educator.

Interesting quarter! It looks like it could be a repunched mintmark. The copper around the right edge looks interesting too. There's also some copper showing through the left side near the edge. I need to take a closer look at my pocket change. Thanks for sharing!
