We Need to "Up Our Game" on Here

I was formerly an active participant on money.org forums, right when they initially began. About 4 years ago, almost EXACTLY 4 years ago, I started participating on CoinTalk.com. It has taken me 4 years to finally decide that forum is not worth the powder it would take to blow it to a very Dante-esque place. Only the ANA has both the potential, and the active REAL membership, to make it a viable place to be, stay and grow.

That other place is the rampant ego-soothing trip of its moderators, and not the "house organ" of America's premier numismatic educational organization. I originally arrived at that other place to correct rampant ignorant disinformation that was being spread thereon about things that did, and did not, happen at the 2014 World's Fair of Money in Rosemont, Illinois, and their site management continues to be hostile to the ANA and its mission. So good riddance.

That said, if "we" are to be the alternative we must be, we do need to "up our game" and support forum threads that both inform and retain an element of fun. I am, admittedly a rather old, and unfortunately, sick man. I have medical maladies galore. I am an ANA National Volunteer, meaning I travel to each and every ANA show, whether a World's Fair of Money in August, or a National Money Show in March, and even a "very rare and very dangerous" October ANA show in Pittsburgh in 2011. Shhhhh. Big secret. People don't talk much about it. I do whatever tasks the ANA staff asks of me, at all of its conventions.

Anyway, I was participant in the October 2016 U.S. Mint conference in the Philadelphia Federal Reserve building. (You should have SEEN Patrick Heller twitching just from being in their building. - KIDDING!) My committee came up with the idea that became our latest dollar program - American Innovations.

So, reach out to the "prodigal old dude" and say hello. I am finally home again.

What happened in Pittsburgh?

It was the last of two October ANA fall shows. It simply was too much for the staff of the ANA to handle to turn around a separate show in two months after the August one. Just one more really dumb idea by a past Board of Governors or a particular President.

Hello VKurtB,

It's funny that you mention the "Innovations" coins. I just received a flyer on that very topic. It was the first I heard of it. So far it is not on the US Mint site, but I called them up and from what I understand they will appear on the winter schedule. I am looking forward to them arriving. Maybe you can answer a question for me. I am assuming that the reverse will show the Innovation graphic. Do you know what the obverse will be? Will they repeat the Presidential image as in the Presidential Dollars were? The flyer didn't really explain it well.

Hi Mike here if your talking the new presidential coins insane the two they released both reverses are the same. If that like that the whole run I have better bullion to collect. Thanks Alot Mike.

Hello, I just received something in the mail from the mint saying that all the designs were unanimously rejected.

Glad you’re back... I haven’t shared here in quite a while. You inspired me! My collecting obsession for years has been classic US commemoratives. I’ve disposed of most of my extensive (for me!) commem collection, and spend my time reading numismatic books and leisurely adding to my type set and an occasional bullion piece. Anyway, sounds like an introduction, and I suppose it is! Anyway, would love to talk Coins😀

Hey VKurtB,

If you want to "up the game" you first need players.  I only came across this thread "by accident" because there was an influx of messages today.  I usually just keep the page at top with the Recently Active Threads showing the four most recent.  I figured I may have missed some and scrolled down to check and found this thread.

In any case, you are correct in that there is a great pool of members available with the ANA.  However, I do not see that these members are actively utilizing the fora.  Perhaps, this may be because even in order to find them, you have to find it listed in the middle of another twenty options under the Community selection.

If the fora had it's own port of entry on the front page, perhaps more will discover and utilize them.  Also, Forum is pretty much an antedated term compared to more modern iterations like Message Board or Chat Board.  Also, with the current trend of social media, many people want microwave interaction...instantaneous.

Waiting for a reply is just too much for some people when they are used to SMS, Twitter, and Facebook chat.  Unfortunately, I do not see the ANA fora "upping the game" much unless it is actively promoted by the Association.

In any case, take care!  Be that example and let's see some quality posts from you and less at that...other place...  ;)
