Please me identify this coin?

Good morning,
Is there anyone that can help me find out where this penny came from? I found it amongst some change I had been sorting at home. I’ve taken it to 2 coin stores and got the same answer from both. It is just nickel plated. What makes it more interesting to me is that it is a 1974 D penny. I’ve read all about the aluminum penny the government had minted and then recalled. I assure you that it is not the illegal aluminum one I possess. I actually have some metallurgists at my work. They actually “gunned” it to see the composition of it. First they did a regular 1974 penny getting the result of 95% copper with zinc coating which it should be pre-1982. Now my coin shows only 49% copper and 44% nickel with no zinc existent. With that much nickel, how could it be just a plated penny and still way the same as a normal one? Any info or forwarding on of this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks and take care,
Scott

That is interesting!! Seems like no one really knows exactly what it is. If it were me I’d send it to Pcgs or ngc and have them take a look.

Maybe it’s struck on a dime planchet. Their composition is similar to what you have.

A grading service might help, if they do a metals analysis.

Grading service will have to say what it is or what happened.

that is a very odd composition, you may have something special on your hand.

I would go to the CONECA website and submit the question to their group.  Since they are dedicated error coin collectors, they have seen it all and may provide  a good explanation.
