strange 1990

Here I have a 1990 lincoln cent, and as you can see on the left side of the coin next to the rim there seems to be a raised part of the surface. I have no clue what this could be and any help would be greatly appreciated.

These are made by electroplating, so I am guessing (and it's only a scientific wild a** guess) that perhaps the electrode on that side was close to the thickening? It is supposed to be uniformly 20 microns of copper in thickness. So something deposited more copper in that area.

But the whole rim looks weird. I wonder at what point the upsetting occurs, before or after the electroplating?  What does the reverse look like?

I would bring it to a deler. I don't know. So I give the best advice I can. Others will have theories. A dealer.can tell you what it is.

IR Bama - is it rare for this kind of mistake to be made?
