AI Use Policy for Article Submissions
Purpose
This policy outlines the acceptable use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in the preparation of manuscripts submitted to our publications. As generative AI technologies become more widely used, we seek to maintain editorial integrity, ensure original authorship, and promote transparency in how content is developed.
Scope
This policy applies to all article submissions, including but not limited to feature articles, columns, letters, reviews, and digital content, whether print or online.
Acceptable Use
AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Grammarly) may be used to support the writing process, including:
– Idea generation or outlining
– Grammar and syntax corrections
– Summarizing publicly available data
– Formatting citations or footnotes
Authors must ensure that any use of AI does not compromise the originality, accuracy, or intellectual contribution of their work.
Prohibited Use
The following uses of AI are not permitted:
– Submitting content primarily or entirely written by AI without substantial human authorship
– Using AI to fabricate quotes, sources, or historical/contextual information
– Submitting AI-generated works under the author’s name without disclosure
– Using AI to obscure or repurpose previously published work (self-plagiarism or recycling)
Disclosure Requirement
If an author uses AI to assist in any part of the writing process, they must include a brief disclosure in a cover letter or email at the time of submission. For example:
“Portions of this article were assisted by generative AI for outlining and grammar correction. All research, analysis, and final content were written and reviewed by the author.”
Failure to disclose significant AI involvement may result in:
– Rejection of the manuscript
– Withholding of author payment
– Disqualification from future publication consideration
Editorial Review
Our editors reserve the right to:
– Use AI-detection software as a screening tool
– Request revisions if AI-generated language is excessive or undermines originality
– Ask authors for clarification regarding their writing process
AI-generated content will not be accepted if it lacks originality, personal insight, factual accuracy, or appropriate attribution. As with all submissions, the ANA reserves the right to decline publication at its discretion.
Ongoing Review
This policy will be reviewed periodically in consultation with our editorial team, the Publications Committee, and legal counsel. As AI capabilities evolve, so will our approach to maintaining fairness, author integrity, and the highest editorial standards.
